I paint in response to my environment, what’s near — what do I see often?  What is new that I am seeing? I try to “not see” a certain amount of visual detail, reducing, simplifying and leaving out.

I live in the part of the United States where big rivers dominate the landscape. Pittsburgh is located at the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers. It is the head of the Ohio, the river Huck Finn and Jim missed while rafting down the Mississippi, where Lewis and Clark engaged a boat builder (with alcohol issues) and finally launched their boat to begin the big explore. It is the western boundary of the French and Indian War, a shared history with the region of the northeast where I grew up. You can’t ignore the rivers.

Drawing, painting, pastels & photography are my media.
